What not to do
What not to do ever
Never lose yourself to anybody or any cause or try to please everybody and neglect your own needs.
What not to do in HK
Talk to strangers
Laugh out loud
Sunbathe
Not wait for the green man to flash at traffic lights
leave home without your identity card
not own a Samsung or iphone
be slow and get in the way
admit you are poor
tell your life story
tell anybody anything
invite people into your home
What not to do in HK as a middle aged divorcee
Talk to married men
Eat out with a married man alone even if he is your best friend
Invite a male friend into your home even if it is purely platonic
Drink beer in public, extra bad if indulging in this vice alone
Show any sign of a cleavage even in sweltering heat
Show any emotion like happiness or sadness so no crying or laughing loudly in public
Allow your skin to get dark (fair is considered beautiful)
Don’t be friendly or you’ll be suspected of having an ulterior motive
Madness Apparent
Today I met with an old friend whom I respect and am very fond of. She advised me not to laugh out too loud because that smacks of insanity and ‘normal’ people don’t do that. I wasn’t sure how to take that. I know she means well and is looking out for me. She explained that only those who have suffered trauma or a bad shock do that. Well spot on, I have suffered a huge amount of trauma in a short space of time, all life changing and not for the better, so yep hands up. She told me that the first time she saw me after thirty years and before I had confided my story she could detect that I had been deeply affected by my suffering.
First I was a bit upset; is it that obvious just from the way I laugh that I am ‘not quite right in the head’? Is there a problem with laughing loud, is it a sure sign of insanity?? Is this yet another cultural thing? Another we don’t do this in HK thing. To be honest I don’t really care what people think of me, especially strangers but it did make me a bit self-conscious. Whenever I laughed at something she said, my friend nodded in approval and say, yes that’s right, like that.
To be perfectly honest I’d rather be in hysterics than in the throes of depression unable to even get out of bed.
I welcome your comments and views.

someone special
Someone special has come into my life and it’s a girl. She’s a few years old and of the 4 legged variety. A beautiful golden retriever called Ariel who is the sweetest gentlest creature ever.
lt was a bold move adopting her as not too long ago l was terrified of dogs. But l have decided to live life to the full and do things l have never before. To face my fears or correct misconceptions.
Already Ariel and I are getting on like a house on fire and l have fallen in love. She’s not going to break my heart and we’ll take good care of each other.
